End of life and end of support notice for Grafana based Waylay dashboards

  • During the course of 2019, Waylay has developed an improved B2B dashboard offering under the name Waylay Dashboard, which solves many of the shortcomings associated with the Grafana-based dashboard.
  • With the December 2019 release of the Waylay Dashboard, it has reached feature parity with the previous dashboarding solution based on Grafana, for almost all use cases. Hence, Waylay will be outphasing its Grafana offering in favor of the Waylay Dashboard. However, we will allow all customers sufficient time for migration.
    • As of January 2020, Waylay will no longer develop any new features on the Grafana based offering. Maintenance for the existing Grafana setups is still done (e.g. bug fixing). Waylay will not sell any new Grafana instances, new customers and new organisations can only use the new Waylay B2B dashboard.
    • As of December 2020, Waylay will no longer provide support for Grafana dashboards, Waylay can continue to host existing Grafana instances (in case still required) but there will be no bug resolution. Existing customers are encouraged to migrate their dashboards to the new Waylay B2B dashboard during this 12 month window. The following activities are required for the migration
    • Grafana dashboards cannot be migrated to the new Waylay B2B dashboard and hence will have to be re-built in the new framework
    • Grafana user account cannot be migrated to the new Waylay B2B dashboard and hence users will require a new account with a new username and password

New features

Flexible device grouping: When defining a group in the Waylay Dashboard, you can define a query based on device tags, such that all devices with those tags automatically belong to your group. Tags can be added by the organisation admin on devices. Devices can have multiple tags and devices can belong to multiple groups at the same time.

Dashboard widgets

All widgets can be resized and repositioned

Time Series Graphs support value downloads in CSV file. When clicking this icon, your browser will download a CSV file with the data of the current view of the graph.

A new graph is available for scatter plot

We introduced tooltips for gauges such that it is easier to set exact thresholds for green/orange/red areas

  • note: the gauge and the bulletin widget always take the last raw value received so far. In other words, they are not controlled by the Time Window settings. In the gauge widget, this value is then rounded to the precision: e.g. if the precision is set to ‘2’, then the value is rounded to 2 digits after the dot.

On various widgets we added more control over the data aggregation, grouping and time window options

The bulletin widget is now capable of showing multiple metrics and you can customize the foreground and background colors for each metric.

Device tracking and geofencing

We have introduced a Map widget for device tracking. If the device has longitude and latitude metrics in the Waylay Time Series Database, then this Map widget can be used to visualize the location and trajectory of this device.

You can also create geofences and alarms on geofences. The creation of a geofence can only be done by the tenant admin and must be done manually on the Waylay platform. Each geofence must

  • Be a resource of the type ‘geofence’
  • Have a human friendly name (this will be displayed in the Waylay Dashboard), e.g. ‘Ghent’
  • Have a meta key ‘geoshape’ and appropriate value. We support polygon and circle geoshape values:

    { "type": "circle", "coordinates": [ 51.2194, 4.4025 ], "radius": 10000 }
    { "type": "polygon", "coordinates": [ [ 51.089091, 3.606198 ], [ 51.110157, 3.869108 ], [ 50.995344, 3.878717 ], [ 50.995685, 3.628888 ] ] }
  • Be assigned to a particular ‘customer’, i.e. the organisation name

  • (optionally) have a ‘color’ in hex format, e.g. “#ed87ad”

The Map widget will always display all geofences created for a particular organisation. The organisation admin can now create an alarm on the Map widget for a particular device and geofence.

When you create such a geofence alarm on the Waylay Dashboard, a geofence rule will be instantiated on the Waylay platform. This rule will use the geofenceSensor

Organisation specific settings

A tenant admin can customize the settings of services for each organisation and which settings are changeable by the organisation admin. For example, if the Twilio SMS service is available to send SMS notifications when an alarm is triggered, then the tenant admin can

  • Enable or disable this service for organisation admins. If it is disabled, then the organisation admin will not be able to choose SMS as action when creating an alarm
  • Make SMS service settings visible or invisible for organisation admins, e.g. hide the authentication token for the Twilio SMS provider.
  • Configure default SMS service settings, e.g. the FROM_PHONE originator telephone number for the SMS

The tenant admin can now set per organisation task quotas and meta data whitelists. The task quotas limits the number of tasks/alarms that an organisation admin can create within one organisation. If the task quota is exceeded, then the organisation admin will get an error message on the screen that any new task cannot be created.

The metadata whitelists are meant for tenant admins to define which device metadata is visible to the organisation admin and users. This allows the tenant admin to restrict the info widget to display only whitelisted metadata key and values.

View only user role

We introduced a new user role: view only. The below table gives an overview of the access rights and operations allowed for each of the roles

Dashboard archival

We introduced a way to archive an organisation dashboard. Once a dashboard is archived, it is not deleted from the system, but it is no longer viewable for its users.

  • You cannot un-archive without help from Waylay Devops. Please contact us via the regular support channels.
  • You cannot re-use the same name for a new organisation
  • Archived organisations are excluded from billing reports

Dashboard import/export

Copy and unlink: this feature is particularly handy for dashboard building and collaboration between different organisation admins within one organisation. When you click ‘Copy dashboard & Unlink’, a local copy of the dashboard will be stored in your browser cache. After you made changes (e.g. add widgets to the dashboard), you can then again publish the dashboard which will overwrite the default dashboard stored in the cloud for this organisation. Another organisation admin, can then take the changes of the first organisation admin, click ‘Copy dashboard & Unlink’ and continue working on the dashboard.

You can now import and export dashboard configurations. When you click the export button, the browser will download a JSON file with the dashboard settings of the widgets

  • Note that dashboard input/export is only supported on the device level, not on the group level

Support for non-svg floor plans

When creating a group, you can now enter a public URL as the link to the background image you want to show as the “plan”. This can be any picture with format in jpg or png.

The picture has to be hosted outside of Waylay and accessible via a public URL.
